If you accidentally draw blood (which is easy to do with fussy, fidgeting babies), don't worry. Using a sterile gauze pad, gently apply pressure to stop the bleeding. But don't put a bandage around the tiny cut — babies love to put their fingers in their mouths, which can loosen the bandage and make it a choking risk.

Because your baby's nails are super-soft and thin (and small!) during their first few weeks, you may find it easiest to simply file their nails with an emery board (not a metal file). This does take more time than trimming with baby nail clippers, but it's very safe.

"You will need baby nail scissors, nail clippers and nail files.” explains Sonya. “Make sure they are specifically made for babies, as adult size nail scissors will be too big and you risk hurting their fingers and toes.”

Dangerous chemicals in the air You have the right to take some time to yourself as a new mother, but the nail salon is not the place for a newborn. The chemical fumes and particulates floating in the air can cause dangerous reactions in adults, let alone immature newborn lungs.
